Environment Science is a field of study that integrates the different science about environment namely biological, physical, and information science. It also includes biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, plant science, zoology, soil science, mineralogy, oceanography, limnology, geology, geography, and atmospheric science. It is the study of all the environment and its factors, solutions to environmental problems.
Environment science provides a quantitative, interdisciplinary way of studying the environment in an integrated manner. Environmental study and environmental engineering are related to environmental science. Environment study is more related to the study of science that understands human relationships, their perceptions, and policies adopted towards the environment. Environmental engineering studies about design and technology to improve the quality of the environment in all aspects.
Environmental scientists study and understand about the earth processes, evaluates better alternate energy systems, controlling and mitigating pollution, how to manage natural resources, effects of global climate change. Any interaction of physical, chemical or biological process with the environment leads to environmental problems. These environmental scientists analyze the problem to bring a systematic approach to solve them. An effective element of an environmental scientist includes knowledge to relate space and time and also provide a quantitative analysis of these factors.
Environmental science came into existence after it was driven by the need to analyze complex environmental problems, enforcement of environmental laws, growing public awareness to address environmental issues. Publications of landmark environmental books, major environmental issues like the oil spill, a fire have enabled to the high visibility of environmental issues and need to address its issues.
Environmental science and ecology can be interchanged in common usage. But ecology relates to the study of organisms and their interactions with the environment and other organisms. Ecology is a subset of environmental science which could be entirely related to chemical or issues of public health.
There is considerable overlap between these two. The National Center for Education Statistics in the US defines environmental science as a program that studies on applying principles of physical, chemical and biological processes to study and solve the environmental issues, controlling pollution, human social interactions.
